Vietnam halts import of cars with changed VINs

The Prime Minister has asked authorities to stop the import of cars whose Vehicle Identification Numbers (VIN) have been changed overseas.

Police have recently found almost a hundred cases in which cars were imported with the numbers changed. Most of the cars had not been used before being imported.

According to car importers, exporters might have changed the numbers of their own will or upon the request of import partners in order to fake the vehicle's generation date, make them look safer to the environment and sell for more money.
