Toyota Vietnam announces free repairs on Fortuner
2011-0517
Toyota Vietnam has announced plans to check and replace bolts and adjust wheels’ angle for Fortuner cars. The company said the bolts could have been misshaped and cannot be used.
According to an engineer from Toyota Vietnam, the technical issue on Fortuner is due to too much tightening but this was corrected in 2009.
But since Toyota Vietnam has not announced which specific Fortuner cars are to be recalled, the said technical problem could be new or could have stemmed from the past problem back in 2009.
Earlier, Toyota Vietnam admitted that 278 Camry 3.5 and Camry 2.4 cars have their bolts on the front tightened too much beyond standard.
Such Camry vehicles were produced between January 28 and March 23 this year.
Camry 3.5 subject to recall bear Vehicle Identification Number lying in the range between XXB 6001801 and XXB 6001810 while Camry 2.4 XXB 6008875 and XX 6009175.
According to the document, in the worst case scenario, the bolts could be broken due to too much screwing.
Concerning the 8.830 Innova vehicles that suffer from brake, screw, and seat problems, Toyota Vietnam has not submitted any specific plan.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Transport has instructed Vietnam Register to order Toyota Vietnam to recall all the faulty cars.
Earlier Le Van Tach, an engineer working for Toyota, had released documents revealing three major glitches in Innova and Fortuner vehicles.
The cars made in Vietnam face balance issues since their screws are not tightened properly as instructed by the Japanese company, he said. The brakes and seats do not meet safety standards either, he said.
He blamed them on outdated equipment used at Toyota Vietnam’s factory.
Two of the glitches are likely to take a long time to fix and only Toyota can fix them since they require special tools and training, he explained.
At a press briefing on April 1, Toyota had admitted to these problems in Innova cars, saying they could have a bearing on safety.
