Auto imports accelerate in January

Six thousand automobiles were imported in January for US$107 million, a rise of, the General Statistics Office has reported.
The jump is attributed to people scrambling to buy before a tariff hike came into effect on January 29.
The new tariffs, which are up 1-6 percent, have pushed the prices of imported vehicles by several hundreds to thousands of dollars.
Last year auto sales were down 17 percent at 150,000 units due to the global economic crisis, the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers Association said.
