2011-0919
Vietnam Daewoo Motor Co., or Vidamco, was renamed GM Vietnam and would stop manufacturing cars of the make Daewoo after its 18 years of presence in the local automobile market.
Gaurav Gupta, managing director of GM Vietnam, said the company would produce cars of only one brand Chevrolet. The new name is a strategic step towards bringing this auto brand name closer to Vietnamese customers, he said.
This change is a new beginning for GM in Vietnam in accordance with the group’s developing strategy, said Gaurav.
“We look forward to using GM’s global resources to introduce new high-quality products and services that will enable customers across the country to buy and own Chevrolet cars.”
GM Vietnam has also made some changes in operation including upgrade of its distribution network, showrooms and customer services centers to meet global Chevrolet standards.
Besides, the company will still provide maintenance services for owners of Daewoo cars through GM’s customer services centers nationwide. GM Vietnam also plans to introduce three new Chevrolet cars this year.
Before having the name changed into GM Vietnam, Vidamco manufactured some Chevrolet cars including Captiva, Cruze, Spark and Vivant. Meanwhile, the company also assembled Daewoo products of the makes Lacetti and Gentra.
Vidamco, established in 1993 and known as Daewoo Motor Co., became part of GM from 2002 and currently has nearly 600 employees. Its auto plant located in Hanoi City was put into operation in 1995 with a designed capacity of 20,000 cars per year and focused on assembling passenger cars for domestic use and export.
Chevrolet car sales in Vietnam in the first eight months had a year-on-year rise of 40%. GM Vietnam still remains it second position among foreign-invested automakers in Vietnam.
