Many car firms snub Vietnam Motor Show
2011-1028
Only six out of the 18 auto firms belonging to the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (VAMA) will participate in Vietnam Motor Show 2011 from November 16-20 in HCMC.
Despite being organized by VAMA in coordination with Asia Trade Fair and Business Promotion (ATFA), the event at the Saigon Exhibition and Convention Center in District 7 will feature few of its members such as Toyota Vietnam, Honda Vietnam, Mercedes Benz Vietnam, GM Vietnam, Suzuki Vietnam and Saigon Transportation Mechanical Corp (Samco).
Other famous firms like Ford Vietnam, Vietnam Star (Mitsubishi), Isuzu Vietnam, Hino and Truong Hai will be absent.
At a press conference for the 7th Vietnam Motor Show held in HCMC on Monday, a VAMA representative said that the impact of the economy, market slowdown and the high expenditure to invest in a pavilion may have been factors.
A representative of Ford Vietnam told the Daily his firm will not participate due to the gloomy market situation this year and that the company wants to save its budget for marketing activities which are beneficial to its customers.
The participation fee together with expenses to set up a pavilion and transport products to the event costs firms at least US$100,000.
The economic volatility and difficulties have significantly affected the local auto market. Therefore, the show is held with the hope it will heat up the market in the last months of the year.
Despite the reduction in participants, the exhibition’s scale and quality this year has significantly improved, said VAMA. The scale of over 10,000 square meters will gather more than 60 new car models.
The event also draws participation of more than 100 enterprises nationally and internationally in various sectors such as accessories, spare parts, interior decoration, banking and insurance and is expected to attract 120,000 visitors during the five-day show.
