Auto sales declined
2012-0608
Car sales have fallen to an alarming level so far this year, says the Viet Nam Automobile Manufacturers' Association.
In the first quarter, association members sold 24,100 cars, a drop of 36 per cent compared with the same period last year. Multi-purpose vehicles slid 48 per cent and commercial cars fell 29 per cent.
At the beginning of the year, the association forecast 130,000 to 140,000 cars would be sold but based on sales so far, the number will reach only 100,000, equal to that of 2007.
Nevertheless, despite dealers having low capital and a higher number of unsold cars than usual, producers are still planning to introduce new models to Viet Nam, albeit in lower numbers.
The reduction in automobile sales in the first four months is expected to reduce the State budget by VND60,000 billion (US$290 million).
