Sedan sales on the rise

2011-1012
Sales of sedans by members of the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers Association (VAMA) continued to go up in September following the strong rise in two previous months.

VAMA’s members sold over 10,030 vehicles of all types in September, a year-on-year rise of 10%, in which sedans accounted for 4,145 units, up 51%, according to the association’s latest report.

The small car sales went up due to high demands for personal cars, and buyers are often businessmen having high income and affluent people, some auto dealers explained.

In addition, policies to restrict imports of completely-built-up cars also contribute to a surge in sales of locally-assembled sedans, according to experts.

Four-wheel drive and multi-purpose vehicles saw a slight rise of 1% from the same period last year with 1,993 units sold. Meanwhile, commercial cars sold in September dropped by 12%, which is partly caused by economic difficulties, credit tightening and high interest rates that adversely impacted on enterprises as target buyers of such vehicles.

Toyota Vietnam surpassed Truong Hai Auto to become the auto firm having highest car sales in September, with 3,048 units and a year-on-year rise of 16% while that of Truong Hai Auto is 2,677 units and 22%.

The figures of GM Vietnam, Ford Vietnam and Mercedes-Benz Vietnam are 1,068, 825 and 256 units respectively.

The total number of units sold by VAMA’s members in the January-September was 80,678, or a rise of 3% year-on-year. Truong Hai Auto still has the highest car sales in this period with 23,413 units sold.
