2011-1123
Truong Hai Auto Joint Stock Co. (Thaco) on Wednesday launched the first locally-assembled Kia Sorento CKD which is also the 30,000th Kia car assembled at its factory in central Vietnam after four years of operation.

Bui Kim Nha, deputy director of Thaco-Kia, said Thaco has invested US$10 million in the assembly lines of Kia Sorento sport utility vehicle with an annual output of 5,000 units, raising the designed capacity of its Thaco Kia factory from 20,000 to 25,000 units per year.

Kia Sorento, which is widely used around the world, was among the best-selling cars in the U.S. in 2010 and was in the top 10 family cars in 2011. Around 700 completely-built-up Kia Sorento cars have been imported and sold in Vietnam after one year of presence in the local market.

The Kia Sorento CKD assembled by Thaco is equipped with a Theta II DOHC 2.4L engine and six-speed automatic transmission. It consumes about 9.2 liters of fuel in 100 kilometers.

The 32-hectare Thaco-Kia factory, built in 2007 in Chu Lai Economic Zone in Quang Nam Province with an output of 25,000 units per year and investment of US$120 million, is equipped with modern technologies.

The factory has produced 30,000 units of three models of Kia New Morning, Kia New Carens and Kia Forte which are among the top-selling cars in Vietnam.

* The management board of Danang Export Processing and Industrial Zones Authority on Wednesday awarded an investment license to a Japan-Thailand joint venture to build a plant producing auto spare parts in Hoa Cam Industrial Park.

The plant, invested by Japan’s Tokai Kogyo and Thailand’s Toacs, will produce components and spare parts for auto manufacturers such as Honda, Toyota, Nissan and General Motors. After having the construction plan and necessary procedures completed, the project will be kicked off in February next year and put into operation in 2013.

The plant in Danang City will be the sixth producing auto spare parts that Tokai Kogyo has invested abroad, after facilities in the U.S., China, Thailand, Indonesia and India.
